| After the lead locomotive on the Empire Builder broke down following a station stop in Grand Forks, North Dakota, a plan was made to drop it off in the nearby Grand Forks yard and wye the remaining two locomotives so that a suitable one could lead. To carry out this plan, however, meant detaching all the locomotives from the rest of train. So, for about 45 minutes, this bizarre scene of an Amtrak train without locomotives but holding, in my estimate, at least 200 angry passengers could be seen at the western end of Grand Forks. |
